GREENPORT — What was reported as a possible electrical fire brought Greenport firefighters to Walmart on Wednesday afternoon.

At about 2:54 p.m., Columbia County 911 sent Greenport Fire Department to the store, at 460 Fairview Ave., after a caller reported smelling the odor of something burning in the area of the Dunkin Donuts.

When firefighters arrived, officials also reported the faint odor of something burning, Greenport Fire Chief John Onufrychuk Jr. said.

Crews combed through the electric system and tested everything, including circuit breakers, and were unable to locate a problem. They also used thermal imaging cameras and found nothing wrong, Onufrychuk said.

Traffic was restricted in parts of the parking lot.

Firefighters were on the scene for about 30 minutes.

The store was not evacuated, Onufrychuk said.

The fire call at Walmart was less that 24 hours after Walmart staff presented dinner and a cake to Greenport firefighters to thank them for their service to the community.

About 20 firefighters were on hand Tuesday afternoon at the Greenport No. 1 Firehouse on Route 23B to enjoy the sub platters and cake, Onufrychuk said.
