Stockholm, September 8, 2021/PRNewswire/--Infineon Technologies AG (FSE: IFX / OTCQX: IFNNY) and Blixt Tech AB announced today that they have reached an agreement to jointly develop solid-state products based on Infineon Brief introduction of circuit breaker (SSCB). By providing excellent electrical safety, real-time circuit level metering, and complete control of power flow, the new solid-state circuit breaker has the potential to disrupt the $38 billion circuit breaker market.

There is a strong global demand for faster, safer and smarter circuit breakers to support the grid to handle increasingly diverse combinations of energy and peak loads.

By 2050, more than half of the world's energy will come from clean but unstable renewable energy sources. Electrification and increased peak loads continue to put pressure on outdated grid infrastructure, while heat waves and droughts add to the challenges. At the same time, we are increasingly relying on direct current (DC). The lack of fast and reliable DC protection devices has caused fundamental safety issues.

Obviously, the power system must be developed into a new digital infrastructure. Solid state circuit breakers will become an important part of supporting safer, more flexible and more reliable AC and DC power grids, and completely changing the way we produce, manage and consume electricity.

"We are creating a new value chain that will generate value through the digital control of electricity, from energy service providers to the edge of the grid, where building owners and managers consume, produce, and manage electricity, and in between. Any stakeholder in the country", who is interested in monitoring and controlling electricity. The technological transition to digital circuit breakers has begun. With the new and upcoming SSCB certification standard, we expect the number to increase significantly. Said Blixt's CTO Jens Peter Schroer.

"Although we at Infineon can contribute at the component and design level, and have strong sales and distribution channels around the world, Blixt brings extensive expertise in the solid-state circuit breaker field and system level. With Blixt cooperation, we can further accelerate the technological transformation of solid-state circuit breaker solutions and accelerate time to market. We hope to shape this market together,” said Robert Herman, Infineon’s high-voltage conversion senior product marketing director.

The main feature of the new SSCB jointly developed by Blixt and Infineon is to replace all traditional moving parts with power electronic equipment, which can control power and interrupt large currents within a few microseconds, and is 1000 times faster than mechanical circuit breakers. But the advantages don't stop there. As a digital device, solid-state circuit breakers also include real-time metering, remote control, and programmability-functions that mechanical circuit breakers do not have can only be achieved by additional expensive equipment.

The core of the Blixt Zero smart circuit breaker is the power stage, which is built by Infineon's CoolMOS™ S7. This new MOSFET technology is optimized for solid-state applications and provides an unprecedented low RDS(on) * A to achieve the best power density at the lowest system cost. This is a key driver for demanding and cost-sensitive high-power applications, and smart circuit breakers are one of them. In addition to power components, Infineon also contributes to all related system equipment, such as power supplies, microcontrollers, sensors, safety and security equipment, and IoT functions. On the basis of the first generation, the enrichment of the SSCB feature set and further system cost optimization will be the next planning step.

To further strengthen cooperation, Blixt has been appointed as a full member of Infineon's Quality Partner Ecosystem Program. This is to recognize the company's mature capabilities in designing and providing powerful and trustworthy solutions, especially in new technologies and applications related to solid-state circuit breakers. Blixt’s strategic considerations are fully in line with Infineon’s overall product-to-system (P2S) approach.

Blixt's mission is to use solid-state technology to achieve complete software control of electricity. The first two innovations independently developed by Blixt include current and voltage control. The company has 30 patent applications in the fields of solid-state circuit breakers, voltage conversion and battery technology. Blixt's was established in Sweden in 2018 and has won many industry awards for its innovation.
